There won’t be yet another Republican vying to take on Sen. Claire McCaskill in Missouri this year.

State Auditor Tom Schweich, who holds the same position McCaskill had when she first ran for Senate in 2006, announced today that he is no longer considering entering the GOP primary fray. Schweich said the decision was personal and did not take any internal polling.

“After several days of consultations with family, friends, and supporters, I have decided to continue my work as Missouri Auditor — a job which I enjoy, and which allows me to make a positive contribution to the people of Missouri every day,” Schweich said in a statement.

Schweich added that his entrance to the race “would make the GOP primary situation much more contentious, and would, therefore, not increase the chances of defeating Claire McCaskill in November.”

His decision not to run means the Republican field is still led by businessman John Brunner, former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman and Rep. Todd Akin. McCaskill’s seat is among the most vulnerable in the country, and Roll Call currently rates the race as a Tossup.
