Take Five
Tuesday is here once again, and that means it’s time for HOH to help you get to know another lawmaker through five fun questions. This week, Rep. André Carson (D-Ind.) discusses Peyton Manning, rap alter egos and art museums.
Q: What was the most peculiar case you remember working on as a law enforcement officer?
A: It would have to be an organized crime case. I’m not at liberty to offer any details, though.
Q: In high school, what would you have been voted as “most likely” to be?
A: In those days, folks would have said a businessman or a talk-show host. I was — and believe I still am — really good with people. I was an activist in school, and I also hosted events where students could showcase their talents or rhetorical abilities.
Q: Who is your favorite Indiana professional athlete of all time? How did you feel about the Colts letting go of Peyton Manning?
A: There are a lot of great choices, but I would have to say [former Indiana Pacers basketball great] Reggie Miller. I really admired No. 31’s work ethic, and he was an incredible athlete. He and I also went to the same barbershop, and he has a lot of personality. Like every other Colts fan, I was disappointed to see Peyton Manning go, but I believe the Colts will emerge as a formidable team in the next few years and get another Super Bowl championship.
Q: As a teenager, you were a rap artist known as “Juggernaut.” What other genres of music do you listen to besides hip-hop?
A: I love all kinds of music. I listen to rock, R&B, classical, electronica, pop, alternative. Some of my favorite artists are Seal, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stevie Wonder, Usher, John Mayer, Mary J. Blige, New Edition, Jodeci and Thievery Corporation.
Q: When one does a Google search for “Indianapolis historical sites,” several museums, memorials and cathedrals come up. Which is your favorite?
A: I’m a big fan of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. It’s near my home, and it gives visitors an opportunity to escape into another world. It showcases how modern art has extracted many things from other cultures and societies around the world. It is a great stop for all art lovers, from the most serious of fans to those who are just looking for a fun place to visit.
