It splices together a montage of Kelly statements, a tactic Barber’s former boss Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D) used in her successful race against Kelly in 2010. It also features broader themes from Democratic ads in the 2010 cycle. The narrator calls Kelly “radical.” The national sales tax was a common issue in ads in the last cycle.
The two men are running in Arizona’s 8th district special election to replace Giffords.
Roll Call rates this race a Tossup. The special election is on June 12.
Update | Kelly campaign spokesman John Ellinwood responded to the ad.
“The only candidate in this race who supports higher taxes is Ron Barber. Ron Barber supports Cap-and-Trade, which would create a national energy tax, and ObamaCare, which raises taxes by half a trillion dollars,” Ellinwood wrote in an email. “Jesse Kelly has a plan to reduce gas prices and create millions of new jobs by developing American energy.”
