Ilyse Hogue, a former staffer for Media Matters for America and MoveOn.org, will join NARAL Pro-Choice America as its president, the organization announced Monday.

Hogue, a fixture in liberal Washington circles, most recently co-founded Friends of Democracy, a super PAC that raised more than $2.4 million last cycle to support candidates who back campaign finance reform.

“She’s super strategic and super smart,” said Adam Smith, a spokesman for Public Campaign. “I can’t wait to see her bring that insight, intelligence and creativity to NARAL and a new generation of reproductive rights activists.”

“It’s hard to think of anyone better qualified to help NARAL usher in the next generation of the pro-choice movement than Ilyse Hogue,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement. “Ilyse’s progressive voice and values align with everything we stand for.”

Hogue sat on the board of the Public Campaign and worked with the organization’s executive director to found Friends of Democracy last year.

NARAL’s PAC spent more than $1.5 million in support of candidates who back abortion rights in 2012.

Hogue has also served as a senior adviser to Media Matters for America and as the former director of political advocacy and communications for MoveOn.org.

She replaces Nancy Keenan, who announced last spring that she would retire after eight years with the organization.
