Markey Raises $1 Million More Than Gomez, Spends $4 Million More
Strong fundraising in April and May added to his $4.6 million cash balance on April 11 helped Democratic Rep. Edward J. Markey far outspend Republican Gabriel Gomez in the battle to fill the Massachusetts Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, now President Barack Obama’s secretary of State.
The coverage period for the pre-general election report included the last few weeks of the primary election campaigns for both Markey and Gomez.
The Markey Committee reported receipts of $3,106,664 and disbursements of $5,480,835 from April 11 to June 5, leaving $2,264,702 cash on hand and no debts. The committee raised $924,726 in small contributions of $200 or less. It received $298,140 from PACs and other committees.
Major donors included Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va.; Abby Rockefeller; Orin Kramer (managing partner, Boston Provident); Tom Daschle (consultant, DLA Piper); Beth Dozoretz (self-employed); Martin Frost (retired); Larry F. O’Brien III (principal, OB C Group); and Ted Kennedy Jr. (attorney, Marwood Group); among others.
Disbursements included regular and consistent payments to Shorr Johnson Magnus for TV media buys. The committee paid $215,617 on April 15; $66,554 on April 18; $147,703 on April 23; $669,271 on April 24; $216,220 on May 7; $574,750 on May 20; and $344,850 on May 22. The committee paid Kiley & Company for polling; CHS Mailing Inc. for direct mail; Will & Lighthouse LLC for web design and hosting; and AMS Communications for other direct mail; among others.
Gabriel Gomez for Senate reported raising $2,121,990 and disbursing $1,624,613 from April 11 to June 5, leaving $997,121 cash on hand and debts of $900,100 all owed to the candidate. The committee raised $314,392 from contributions of $200 or less. The committee received $170,000 from PACs and other committees. A joint fundraising committee transferred in $90,985. The candidate loaned the committee $300,000 on April 18.
