Newark Mayor Cory Booker announced he hired another veteran of President Barack Obama’s campaign team to join his Senate campaign in New Jersey.

Addisu Demissie will manage Booker’s bid for the special election, according to a Tuesday news release. He joins several other former hired hands for Obama: strategists Mitch Stewart and Jeremy Bird, polling firm Benenson Strategy Group and campaign spokesman Kevin Griffis.

The front-runner in the race, Booker has a team that also includes New Jersey-based Message & Media and his lead consultant, Mark Matzen. (Read more about his campaign in Roll Call: Booker’s Boardwalk Bid for Senate). He is running in the special election to serve out the late Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg’s term.

Demissie worked on Obama’s 2008 general-election campaign in Ohio in 2008, and on Rahm Emanuel’s bid for mayor in Chicago in 2010. Before his work for Obama’s campaign, Demissie was a deputy field director for then-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign in Iowa and Connecticut.

The Aug. 13 Democratic primary will include Booker, state Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver, and Reps. Frank Pallone Jr. and Rush D. Holt. The nominee is expected to cruise to victory in the Oct. 16 general election.
