Jonathan Soros, the son of financier George Soros, has donated $1 million in the first six months of 2013 to the Friends of Democracy, a federal PAC with a non-contribution account. In 2011-2012 the PAC spent $1.75 million on independent expenditures against Republicans in House races.

The Friends of Democracy reported today it had receipts of $1,808,250 and disbursements of $1,278,760 during the first six months of 2013. The PAC has $566,134 cash on hand as of June 30.

Jonathan Soros (CEO, JS Capital Management LLC, N.Y.) was the major donor, giving $650,000 on Jan. 28, $100,000 on Jan. 29 and $250,000 on May 30. Other major donors were Sean Parker (entrepreneur, N.Y.) $245,000; Matt Cutts (software engineer, Google, Calif.) $190,000; Kathleen McGrath (self-employed, Calif.) $100,000; Andrea Soros (executive director, Trace Foundation, N.Y.) $100,000; John Pritzker (founder and director, Geolo Capital, Calif.) $45,000; Dennis Mehiel (investments, Four M Investments, N.Y.) $25,000; and Eric Uhrhane (software engineer, Google Inc., Calif.); among others.

The committee spent $1.1 million on “voter education – NY”; $54,502 on social media; and $37,500 on Internet consulting; among other costs.
