If you thought you had maxed out your contributions to the congressional campaign committees, watch out! They’ve dreamed up another avenue for money and are seeking approval to ask you for more money.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee have submitted an advisory opinion request to the Federal Election Commission that would grant the committees permission to raise funds under the separate contribution limit of their “recount funds” and use the funds for payment of  “office building expenses.”

Whenever the four congressional campaign committees agree on something it usually means the fix is in. And with all of the terms of the FEC commissioners expired, the commissioners who want to continue in office may feel a need to cooperate.

Organizations filing comments opposing the advisory opinion request state it would create a loophole for the creation of a “slush fund” by doubling the contribution limits. They indicate “office building” accounts were outlawed in 2002, and that “recount funds” have nothing to do with “office building” expenses.
