Boehner Dings Obama on Health Care Promise (Video)
Speaker John A. Boehner is calling out President Barack Obama on YouTube for breaking the oft-repeated promise that “if you like your health insurance, you can keep it.”
The video, titled “Truth-O-Meter,” features the president repeatedly issuing his health care promise while the Truth-O-Meter weighs Obama’s words — all while clownish, clapping music plays in the background.
“We will keep this promise, to the American people,” Obama says as the video begins.
“If you like your doctor, you will be able to keep your doctor,” the president says, and a red “FALSE” comes across the screen as a buzzer sounds.
“If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan,” Obama says to a similar effect.
The GOP is making a concerted effort to ding the president and Democrats for selling Obamacare on that line of rhetoric, and further, for altering the promise with some variation of “if the plan hasn’t changed since the law went into effect.”
The Ohio Republican and other GOP members feel Americans were misled, and they’re looking to score political points by exposing the broken promise and showing Democrats tweaking their rhetoric to make the president’s promise true.
To that end, the video shows White House press secretary Jay Carney giving a less than flattering defense of Obama by noting that he can’t time travel.
“The president, as awesomely powerful as the office is, can’t go back in time,” Carney says in the video.
Republicans didn’t deem that statement false.
