Updated 7:15 p.m. | Majority Leader Harry Reid has been released from the hospital, where he was diagnosed as “exhausted,” his spokesman said late Friday.

“Senator Reid has been released from the hospital and is back at home with his wife, Landra,” spokesman Adam Jentleson said in a statement. “As previously stated, he went to the hospital as a precaution. The doctors diagnosed him as exhausted, not anything more serious, and have cleared him to go back to work. He spent today resting, talking to family, friends and colleagues, reading the news and discussing Senate business. He appreciates the kind words and thoughts sent by so many, thanks the doctors at George WashingtonUniversity Hospital for the excellent care he received, and wishes everyone a Happy Holidays.”

The Nevada Democrat earlier missed the final votes of 2013.

“Early this morning, Senator Reid was not feeling well and as a precaution decided to go to the hospital. Tests have been conducted and everything is normal,” Jentleson said earlier in a statement. “He is alert, resting and feeling better.”

The No. 2 Senate Democrat, Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, stood in for Reid at the Senate’s opening on Friday morning and said he had spoken to Reid.

“The majority leader is absent today and I will be acting in his place,” Durbin said. “Senator Reid called me this morning. He sounded good and we look forward to his speedy recovery.”

Today is the Senate’s last day of legislative business after an agreement was reached Thursday night setting up a Jan. 6 confirmation vote for Janet L. Yellen to be chairwoman of the Federal Reserve.
