Some E-Cigarette Makers Support a Ban
E-cigarette companies took a beating from Senate Democrats at a hearing last year focused on their marketing practices, but LOGIC Technology President Miguel Martin said some brands — such as his own — are taking steps to be responsible.
According to Martin, LOGIC doesn’t advertise on television or use celebrity spokespeople and would support both a ban on online e-cigarette sales and on candy-like or youth-oriented flavors. Currently, menthol and tobacco are the only flavors the company offers.
“No one has seemed interested in companies like ours,” he said. “It doesn’t feed the agenda that some people are putting forth.”
Martin, who spent 18 years working for Big Tobacco, also maintained that e-cigarette sellers do not have to sacrifice their business interests in order to be responsible. His company is one of the largest manufacturers of e-cigarettes in the United States.
At the same time, Martin said he thinks it would be a mistake to simply apply the existing restrictions on traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, citing what he called inherent differences between the two products.
“I think one of the greatest mistakes that was ever made was calling it an electronic cigarette,” he said.
