#tbt Trivia: A Whole Lot of Elephants
The only thing better than celebrating a birthday is celebrating it all year long. Roll Call is turning 60 and we’re doing a whole bunch of stuff to mark six decades of covering Congress.
Every week we will memorialize Roll Call’s 60th with #ThrowbackThursday via the @rollcall Twitter feed. Follow along there!
Here are the links in case you missed our #tbt last week , and the week before that.
This week features Bill Clinton, quilts and some old-school tech. Q: What did Bill Clinton promise his aides in January 1992? A: Bill Clinton promised that there would be no “Gary Hart” moments in his campaign for president. At the time, Clinton was heading toward the party nomination, but rumors had surfaced about alleged sexual misconduct.
Hart, of course, was a top contender for the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination when photos of him and Donna Rice next to the boat “Monkey Business” surfaced. His campaign never recovered.
Q:What did the Republican congressional wives make for “the next Republican First Lady” in 1964? A: A quilt, complete with 213 elephants, signed by GOP members of Congress.
Q: What was the “hi-tech,” Rep. Robert Dornan, R-Calif., using during a demonstration in 1990? A: A (huge) cellphone.
