CQ Roll Call — Winning
The Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association recognized CQ Roll Call for excellence in reporting and journalism in its annual editorial contest for print and online work published in 2014. The contest, governed by the association’s Editorial Committee, admitted nearly 2,000 entries from member publications among 50 categories. CQ Roll Call brought five awards to Capitol Hill. Hill Navigator columnist Rebecca Gale was awarded second place for business reporting for “The Other Back Room: Breastfeeding on Capitol Hill ” (Roll Call, Feb. 2, 2014). Roll Call’s annual Wealth of Congress project, which calulates the 50 richest members of Congress, won both first and second place in the category of best use of interactive media. Staff honored for this award include Jay Hunter, Bo Huttinger, Cyra Master and Video Editor JM Rieger. Roll Call cartoonist RJ Matson won first place for best editorial cartoon with “Cantor at a Loss ” (Sept. 14, 2014). The entire Roll Call staff was recognized for excellence in social media reporting, receiving first place for the innovative State of the Union in Three Words project (#SOTUin3Words), which launched in 2014 and repeated in 2015 .
“I’m so proud of the team for its achievements. But what’s even more exciting is that we were recognized both for our core coverage — our longtime cartoonist who started a new blog this year and Rebecca Gale’s column that’s a must-read for Hill staff — and for new endeavors like the #SOTUin3Words social media project and expanding the 50 Richest work into a database detailing the full Wealth of Congress,” said Roll Call’s editor-in-chief, Christina Bellantoni.
