The National Republican Senatorial Committee will report raising more than $4.2 million in April and ending the month with $5 million in cash on hand, according to figures provided to CQ Roll Call.  

Its monthly haul allowed the committee to pay down some of its debt from the 2014 cycle, when the party netted nine seats and won control of the Senate for the first time since losing it in 2006. The NRSC now has $3.5 million in debt, down from $6 million at the end of March. At the same time last cycle, the NRSC carried $9.5 million in debt.  

To retain the majority for another Congress, Republicans can lose no more than five seats (four if Democrats win the White House). The party is defending seats in a half-dozen states President Barack Obama carried twice.  

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has yet to announce its April fundraising figures. As of the end of March, the DSCC had $7.1 million in the bank and $13.7 million in operational debt.  

Monthly reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by Wednesday.
