Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson raised $2 million in the second quarter, as the Republican prepares for a rematch with former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold in one of the country’s most closely watched races.

That’s less than Feingold’s $2.2 million raised, but Johnson’s campaign said it would report $2.75 million in cash on hand, $750,000 more than Feingold. “We’re so appreciative to have so many folks on our team who recognize the continued need for honesty, common sense, and real-world perspective in the Senate,” Johnson campaign manager Betsy Ankney said. “We’re confident that Ron’s support will only continue to grow as the stark contrast in this race becomes more and more clear.”

While the political dynamics of 2016 are unlikely to match 2010, when Johnson defeated Feingold in a tea party wave, Johnson’s campaign is also experiencing a difference in the source of its financing.

Johnson, who was a Wisconsin businessman before his election, spent $9 million of his own money on his first Senate campaign. This time around, he has said repeatedly that he would not do that again . Ankney said that, so far, he’s keeping that pledge and that the $2 million he raised over the last quarter came solely from other donors.

Feingold’s campaign, in a news release, stressed that the $2.2 million it collected was raised between May 14 and the end of June — about half time it took Johnson to raise his $2 million. Second-quarter reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by July 15.

“I’m honored by the support we’ve seen in the early weeks of this campaign,” Feingold said in a statement. “I’ve always listened to the people of Wisconsin, and I’ve always fought for their priorities. Now I’m happy to have thousands of them working side by side with us in our campaign.”

The race is rated a Tossup by the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call.
