Time to brush up on those “Casey at the Bat” references.  

Lines from the iconic poem capturing America’s pastime are sure to abound Tuesday evening when Pennsylvania’s two senators face off at their annual softball game, particularly since one of them shares a surname with baseball’s mighty-but-humbled slugger. Democratic Sen. Bob Casey will face off with GOP Sen. Patrick J. Toomey on the National Mall on Tuesday night in the fifth game of the bipartisan series, which is currently tied at 2-2. Members of the lawmakers’ staffs and interns will take the field as well.  

“It’s a fun bipartisan get-together,” Casey spokesman John Rizzo wrote in an email to HOH. The game dates back to Toomey’s predecessor, the late Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., whose team used to play Casey’s staff in the annual game. Toomey and his staff continued the tradition after Toomey was elected to the Senate in 2010.  

Rizzo wrote that both offices have teams in the Congressional Softball League, but since they’re not in the same division, they set up the game to take on their partisan rivals. The Congressional Softball League hosts more than 60 teams composed of Hill staffers, other federal workers and private sector workers.  

The Casey/Toomey game is set for 6:45 p.m. near Third Street on the National Mall, though the exact location will be determined by field availability.
