Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, announced Tuesday she has split from her financier spouse, Donald Sussman — a break that has so far stymied her administrative obligations and may still impact her hospitality holdings.  

“Donald and I are sorry to say that we have separated and have decided to get divorced. It is a very amicable and truly mutual decision,” Pingree said in a news release. “It is sad for both of us but we continue to have the utmost respect for each other. This is the only statement either of us will have on this private family matter.”  

Per her office, the couple wed on June 18, 2011. Aides further explained the decoupling is the driving force behind Pingree’s delinquent financial disclosure filing, which was reportedly submitted Tuesday. Lawmakers are expected to turn over the fiscal snapshots no later than mid-August, but staff said Pingree utilized the 30-day grace period to break the news to family and friends about the marital change.  

It remains unclear how the divvying up of individual assets will affect the pair’s burgeoning restaurant empire. Pingree was No. 12 on the list of the 50 Richest Members of Congress last year, and 96 percent of the assets she reported were held by her husband.  

Pingree laid the foundation for the gustatory takeover of North Haven several years back by bringing the critically acclaimed Nebo Lodge into being. But Sussman, Pingree told Roll Call in 2014, was the mastermind behind the resurrection of its life-sustaining partner, neighboring Turner Farm.
