Congressman Adopts Baby Girl
Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., received a very special present this year: a baby girl.
Schweikert’s daughter, Olivia, arrived three months ago, according to the Arizona Republic , but he and his wife chose not to announce it right away. Schweikert brought her to a holiday fundraiser in Scottsdale on Dec. 21.
The 53-year-old Republican and his wife, Joyce, have no other children. Schweikert was himself adopted as an infant and his foster father, Bill, was also adopted.
The Schweikerts went through training to become foster parents and expected to be given a 7- to 10-year-old child or siblings. But a physician in Phoenix called the couple at 3 a.m. after delivering a baby girl in October and they drove to the hospital and met Olivia.
“We won the jackpot,” Schweikert told the newspaper. Fatherhood has given Schweikert a new sense of urgency in Congress, he told the Republic. But he added that he would talk his new daughter out of being a career politician.
