The National Republican Congressional Committee ended the last month of 2015 with its best cash on hand and best revenue figures of any off-year December.  

The committee raised $8.6 million in December, and heading into 2016, had $30.1 million in the bank — some $9 million more than at the same point in the midterm cycle. The committee ended 2015 with its best off-year haul since 2005, having raised $62.3 million over the course of the year.  

As the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report’s Nathan Gonzales recently pointed out , strong fundraising numbers don’t necessarily portend electoral success. But Republicans feared the House GOP’s leadership drama last fall would slow fundraising for the campaign committee. And with John A. Boehner, a prolific fundraiser, no longer traveling the country raising money, Republicans were unsure how new leadership would measure up.  

“I will tell you it will be tough to fill the void that John Boehner had built after 25 years,” NRCC finance chairwoman Ann Wagner, R-Mo., told Roll Call in October.  

With such a strong December, Republicans are hoping to put to rest last fall’s qualms about the organization’s fundraising prowess. Speaker Paul D. Ryan raised $2.5 million for the NRCC in December — half a million more than he had promised . He brought in more than $4 million for the committee over the year.  

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., who unexpectedly dropped his bid for speaker last fall, transferred $3.9 million to the committee this year — more than any other member who’s not speaker ever has. Similarly, Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., transferred and raised more for the committee in 2015 than any other previous whip.
