McConnell: Trump ‘Doesn’t Know a Lot About the Issues’
Senate majority leader says likely presidential nominee needs strong VP
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says Donald Trump “doesn’t know a lot about the issues.”
The comments came during Bloomberg’s “Masters in Politics” podcast, in regards to Trump picking a strong vice presidential candidate.
“He needs someone highly experienced and very knowledgeable because it’s pretty obvious he doesn’t know a lot about the issues,” McConnell said. “You see that in the debates in which he’s participated.”

McConnell said he told Trump at the National Rifle Association convention in Louisville, Kentucky, last month to stick to a script despite Trump saying scripts are “boring.”
“I said, ‘Put me down in favor of boring,'” McConnell recalled telling the presumptive nominee. “‘You’ve demonstrated that you have a lot of Twitter followers and you’re good at turning on a big audience. Now you need to demonstrate you have the seriousness of purpose that is required to be president of the United States.'”
McConnell has previously criticized Trump for his recent comments about the ethnic background of Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing a lawsuit involving Trump University.
