Louisiana Rep. Cedric L. Richmond said on Wednesday there were a number of unanswered questions surrounding the death of a man who was shot by police while pinned to the ground during an altercation outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge.  

The Justice Department announced a civil rights investigation, a step Richmond called for, into the case of Alton Sterling, 37, whose death Tuesday in Richmond’s district was captured on video and sparked protests. Richmond called the incident “deeply troubling.”  

“I share in this anger and join the community in the pursuit of justice. My prayers and thoughts are with Mr. Sterling’s family as they deal with this tragedy,” he said in a statement .

“There are a number of unanswered questions surrounding Mr. Sterling’s death,” Richmond said. “Including questions about the initial calls for police presence, the level of force used by officers, the verbal and physical altercation, and the response of the officers after he was shot.”
