Retiring Rep. Richard Hanna was a member of the “Never Trump” movement but now he is with her.   

The New York Republican said, in an op-ed posted on Syracuse.com , he can’t support GOP nominee Donald Trump for president because “he is unfit to serve our party and cannot lead this country.”   

Hanna, who is not running for re-election, highlighted Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s promotion of education and women’s health care, which are issues he said he has been committed to over the years.   

“I trust she can lead. All Republicans may not like the direction, but they can live to win or lose another day with a real candidate,” Hanna said. “Our response to the public’s anger and the need to rebuild requires complex solutions, experience, knowledge and balance. Not bumper sticker slogans that pander to our disappointment, fear and hate.”

Hanna is retiring  after this Congress and the race to replace him in New York’s 22nd District is considered a Tossup by The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report /Roll Call.  

Hanna told Syracuse.com in December  when he announced his retirement plans that he asked his family if he should run. “I took a poll, the only poll that matters,” Hanna said. “For the last year and a half or two years, when I leave for Washington, Grace or Emerson cries. And when I get back, they are happy to see me. But I’ve been indicted by my kids for being away from them.”  

New York Assemblywoman Claudia Tenney won the Republican primary against Hanna’s chosen successor, Steve Wells, back in June. The tea party Republican will battle Kim Myers, the Democratic nominee, in the fall election. Myers was elected to the Broom County legislature in 2014 and is the daughter of Dick’s Sporting Goods founder, Dick Stack.    

Tenney, who ran against Hanna in 2014, criticized Hanna’s endorsement of Clinton Tuesday calling him an “apologist for Hillary Clinton.”  

“It’s about time Hanna finally came clean about being a supporter of the Clinton/Obama agenda that is killing manufacturing, agriculture, and the middle class in upstate New York and across America. Richard Hanna claims to be a centrist, but he’s really just a go-along-to-get along politician who supports policies that benefit Washington insiders and millionaire elites while hurting everyone else,” said Hannah Andrews, Communications Director for Tenney for Congress.
