Former Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh frequently listed his primary residence in the nation’s capital and not at his home state, according to a CNN report.

A review of public documents regarding Bayh’s residence after he left the Senate in 2011 and worked for a Washington law firm that has engaged in lobbying showed that Bayh often listed his two homes in D.C. as his primary residence, though he also owns a condominium in Indiana.

Bayh faces Republican Rep. Todd Young in the race to replace retiring GOP Sen. Dan Coats in November.

Bayh announced he would run for the Senate in July. Young has attempted to make an issue out of Bayh’s time in Washington, alleging that he is out of touch with Indiana. But Bayh counters that he comes from a long line of Hoosiers.

“Evan Bayh is a fifth generation Hoosier and has a record of distinction as Indiana’s senator and governor,” said Bayh’s spokesman Ben Ray. “Evan lives in Indiana and pays his taxes in Indiana, unlike Congressman Young, who has fraudulently taken hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax deductions for a home he didn’t live in in Indiana. Hoosiers know and trust Evan Bayh and will not fall for this cover-up by our opponent.”

Ray was referring to revelations in 2014 that Young violated tax law on a home he was renting out. Young accepted responsibility and paid more than $5,000 in back taxes owed on the property.

Bayh also said of Young in a recent interview, “He’s starting this campaign on a very negative basis, but hopefully, he’ll come around and realize that the path to high public office does not lie down taking a low road.”
