Former President Bill Clinton has come to the defense of his family foundation now that it has become an issue in his wife’s presidential campaign.

“If there’s something wrong with creating jobs and saving lives, I don’t know what it is,” Clinton told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The people who gave the money knew exactly what they were doing. I have nothing to say about it except that I’m really proud. I’m proud of what they’ve done.”

The former president repeated his pledge that the foundation will not accept foreign or corporate donations if Hillary Clinton is elected president and that he won’t raise funds for it.

Bill Clinton was responding to an Associated Press report that showed that many of the foundation’s donors also met with Hillary Clinton during her tenure as secretary of State. Her campaign has challenged the report, saying the AP didn’t include foreign dignitaries or U.S. government officials with whom she also met.
