Former Secretary of State Colin Powell called Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump “a national disgrace” and an “international pariah” in emails that were leaked Tuesday. 

Buzzfeed News reported that it had viewed the emails obtained by the website DCLeaks, which reportedly has ties to Russian intelligence services. The FBI said in July that it believed Russia was behind an email hack of the Democratic National Committee and other Democratic groups. 

In a June 17 email to Emily Miller, a former aide, Powell said Trump “is in the process of destroying himself, no need for Dems to attack him. [House Speaker] Paul Ryan is calibrating his position again.” 

Powell also said the birther movement — made up of people, including Trump, who questioned the validity of President Barack Obama’s birth certificate — was racist. 

When asked by BuzzFeed News about the emails, Powell, said, “I have no further comment. I’m not denying it.”

The emails also discuss the effect Trump adviser Roger Ailes, the former chairman and CEO of Fox News, will have on winning over female voters. Ailes left the company in July after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced. 

Powell has not endorsed Trump and wrote in another email, “He appeals to the worst angels of the GOP nature and poor white folks,” CNN reported. 

The emails also reveal that Powell is upset over Hillary Clinton’s attempts to cast blame on him for the Democratic presidential nominee’s use of a private email server while she was secretary of State. 

“(Clinton) didn’t need any advice or OK from me; she was already doing it. I gave her written guidance on why and how I had been doing it,” Powell wrote in an email on Aug. 23.
