Democrat Jacky Rosen defeated Republican Danny Tarkanian in Nevada’s 3rd District, The Associated Press reports.

Rosen led Tarkanian 47 percent to 46 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting. 

She will replace GOP Rep. Joe Heck, who vacated the seat for a Senate run to replace retiring Sen. Harry Reid.

Coming into Election Day, the race was rated a Tossup by The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call. Heck was first elected to represent the 3rd District in 2010, and easily won re-election in 2014 by roughly 25 points.

Reid and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee successfully encouraged Rosen, the leader of a local synagogue, to run for the House. Democrats also tried to encourage other candidates to run, but those candidates declined.

Nevada’s 3rd District is on the southern tip of the state and includes a portion of Las Vegas. It also includes Henderson, the second largest city in the state. The district remains majority white, but has experienced a growth in Asian and Hispanic populations in recent years. Major industries in include health care, tourism and gambling.

Rosen previously worked as a computer programmer and software developer and was the first in her family to graduate from college. She was also a member of the Culinary Workers Union Local 226, one of the largest and powerful unions in Nevada, when she worked her way through college.

Rosen supports an immigration overhaul as well as raising the minimum wage. She has also supported more funding for Nevada’s gaming and tourism industries, and is opposed to funding for a nuclear waste storage project at Yucca Mountain.
