As President-elect Donald Trump continues to talk about deporting undocumented immigrants, Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., is asking President Barack Obama to protect the names of those who applied for deferments.

In a statement Tuesday, Chu urged Obama to protect the names of those who applied for deferred action under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents.

“These children and families provided extensive amounts of sensitive information to their government,” she said. “[I]ncluding finger prints and relatives’ home addresses, with the understanding that it would not be used against them.” 

Chu said that now that Trump will take office and campaigned on mass deportations, she said she was concerned the information could be used to target those who applied.

“We promised them security. Now they are facing a nightmare,” Chu wrote. “When we asked immigrants to come out of the shadows, we never imagined the election of a candidate who ran on a policy of mass deportation.”

“I call on the Administration to consider all options to prevent the use of these names for deportation, that can protect these people,” she wrote.
