Larry Dawson, who pulled out a BB gun and pointed it at police at the Capitol Visitor Center last March, pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers while using a deadly weapon.

Dawson, now 67, had reached for a BB gun hidden near his waist after twice setting off the metal detector, according to plea documents. Ignoring orders from police to drop his weapon, Dawson pointed his gun at the officer who had screened him and was shot twice. 

Dawson was hospitalized after being hit in the chest and thigh. 

Though the maximum sentence for the charges is 20 years in prison, according to the DC U.S. Attorney’s Office Dawson is likely to get somewhere from eight to 14 months and a fine of up to $40,000.

Dawson also pleaded guilty to a second charge of failing to appear in court from an unrelated incident. 

In 2015, Dawson was arrested after shouting “I am a prophet of God” on the House floor, but he never showed up for his scheduled hearing. 

U.S. District Court Judge James E. Boasberg will preside over Dawson’s sentencing hearing in February.
