Republican Eric Brakey, Maine’s 28-year-old political wunderkind, has alluded to a possible U.S. Senate run against Sen. Angus King in 2018. 

Brakey was recently re-elected to a second term in the state Senate, and, according to the Maine Sun Journal, he isn’t looking to stop there.

After ruling out the possibility of running for governor, Brakey hedged on his intentions to take on Maine’s independent incumbent.

Brakey told reporters Wednesday he was “not ready to talk publicly” about the Senate race, but ceded that “we might have something to say in the new year.”

King, Maine’s junior senator and a former two-term governor, was easily elected in 2012, and is one of two independents in the Senate, the other being Vermont’s Bernie Sanders.

Maine’s Republican Gov. Paul LePage has also said he might challenge King. LePage is term-limited and cannot run for re-election.

King, like Sanders, caucuses with the Democrats in Washington, so Maine Democrats are unlikely to put up a strong candidate to oppose him, the Sun Journal reported.
