Kansas Rep. Lynn Jenkins, a Republican from the 2nd District, announced Wednesday that she will not seek a 6th term in Congress, nor will she run for any political office in 2018.

“I will not be running for any office in 2018,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “In two years, at the conclusion of this Congress, I plan to retire and explore opportunities to return to the private sector, allowing a new citizen legislator to step up and serve Kansans,” Jenkins wrote.

Jenkins had been considered a possible contender for governor in 2018. And late last year, when then President-elect Donald Trump was considering GOP Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers for Interior secretary, Jenkins was exploring options to run for her leadership seat. 

Jenkins will leave behind a solid Republican district that Trump won by nearly 20 points in November. Frontrunners for the seat include Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach and Attorney General Derek Schmidt, both of whom live in Topeka. 

Alan Cobb, coalitions director for Trump’s campaign, is currently seeking the GOP nomination in the special election to replace 4th District Rep. Mike Pompeo, whom Trump tapped for CIA director. But if Cobb fails to secure the GOP nod from the district’s special convention, GOP operatives could see him sliding over to run in the 2nd District.
