An outside group is trying to draft Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke to challenge Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

In an email to supporters, the Committee to Defend the President, said it was trying to solicit 100,000 signatures within 48 hours to convince Clarke to run.

“Sheriff Clarke, the no-nonsense, law & order leader who was a huge Donald Trump supporter in 2016 would make a great U.S Senator in 2018,” the email reads.

The draft comes after another group aiming to draft Clarke contrasted Clarke with Baldwin, the first openly LGBT U.S. Senator, and criticized her sexuality.

“A GOP-controlled Trump state like Wisconsin should not be represented by a liberal lesbian extremist like Tammy Baldwin,” it said.

Baldwin in turn sent out a fundraising email about the attack, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“This group is eyeing my seat in 2018 and they’ve already started attacking me,” her fundraising email said. “Of course, they didn’t challenge my policies or try to question my record of fighting for Wisconsinites. They went straight to the sort of stomach-turning name-calling we’ve grown so accustomed to in today’s post-Trump-campaign landscape.”

Clarke has emerged as a polarizing figure, speaking out against the Black Lives Matter movement. He is a frequent talk show guest and spoke at the Republican National Convention last year.
