The Return of Nevada’s Sharron Angle
Three-time failed candidate makes fourth bid for federal office in Silver State
Almost a year to the day she announced her last bid for federal office, Nevada Republican Sharron Angle on Tuesday announced a primary challenge to GOP Rep. Mark Amodei in the 2nd District.
The 2010 Senate nominee ran for Senate again last year, losing to former Rep. Joe Heck in the GOP primary, 65 to 23 percent. The tea party favorite previously ran for the 2nd District when it was held by now Sen. Dean Heller.
“The reality is the President can lead, but he cannot do it alone,” Angle said in making her announcement. “In Congress, we contend with the unpredictable Republicans who support, or do not support, what the American people mandated on Election Day.”
While Angle is touting her support for Trump, the congressman was the state campaign chairman for Trump last year. But he expressed initial skepticism about the health care bill Trump has been pushing among House Republicans this week.
Amodei won re-election by 21 points last fall in his safe GOP seat. He ended 2016 with $145,00 in his campaign account, but hasn’t ruled out running for attorney general instead of re-election next year.
He and Angle faced each other in 2010 in the race for the GOP Senate nod before Amodei dropped out.
Angle’s latest federal campaign account had no money in it at the end of 2016.
