King Suggests Senate Hire Comey to Lead Russia Probe

‘This issue is just going to dog them for years,’ Maine independent senator says

Maine independent Sen. Angus King said Wednesday morning that he had a new job in mind for fired FBI Director James Comey: Leading an independent investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and any possible collusion with people connected to the Trump administration.

King, speaking on CNN’s “New Day,” called the thought, “a fun idea,” that occured to him, “in the middle of the night.” He went on to extol Comey’s qualifications for the job.

“Already got his clearances, knows the subject, man of integrity. I’m going to float that today and see what kind of reaction I’m going to get,” King said.

Comey confirmed in testimony before Congress last week that the Justice Department was investigating any links between people close to the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

In his comments Wednesday, King joined a chorus of Democrats to call for a special prosecutor to continue that investigation.

“If the administration doesn’t have anything to hide, they ought to  be cooperating and helping with this,” King said. “Otherwise, this issue is just going to dog them for years, and it’s just going to keep being a dark cloud over whatever they do.”
