President Trump entered the Pentagon on Thursday and said a government shutdown “could very well be.”

The comment came about an hour before the White House said the president supports a House GOP-crafted stopgap to avert the shutdown, which followed an earlier tweet that appeared to undermine the bill.

Trump also sought to pin blame for a shutdown on Democrats, saying they are out to get revenge for his tax law.

“So our tax cuts and our tax reform has turned out to be far greater than anybody ever anticipated,” Trump said before a national security meeting with, as he put it, “all of the generals.”

“And I’m sure the Democrats would like to blunt that by shutting down government,” the president said.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi seemed to think a government shutdown was imminent.

“This is the first time in recent memory that any party has dominated by having the majority … where there has been a government shutdown,” Pelosi said.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows said late Thursday morning the GOP did not yet have the votes to pass the continuing resolution.

In contrast, House Speaker Paul D. Ryan expressed confidence that a stopgap measure would clear the chamber and that president Trump supported the measure.
