Indiana Rep. Todd Rokita used the death of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson on Sunday as an argument for building a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Rokita made the statement after CBS-4 Indy reported that Jackson was killed in an alleged drunk driving accident in Indianapolis with a man who police said was in the country illegally.

Police said Manuel Orrego-Savala from Guatemala was deported from the country in 2007 and 2009. Along with Jackson, Orrego-Savala is accused of killing driver Jeffrey Monroe, who was driving an Uber Jackson had been a passenger in.

“We must do more to get these dangerous illegal immigrant criminals off of our streets, and guarantee this never happens again by building a wall, ending sanctuary cities, and stopping illegal immigration once and for all,” Rokita said in a statement. 

Rokita is running for the Republican nomination for Senate to challenge incumbent Sen. Joe Donnelly later this year.

Police say Orrego-Savala was caught trying to flee the scene on foot.
