Sen. John McCain underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix to treat an intestinal infection, according to a statement from his office.

The infection was related to diverticulitis, the statement said.

The Arizona senator was diagnosed with brain cancer in July after undergoing treatment for a blood clot

“Over the last few months, Senator McCain has been participating in physical therapy at his home in Cornville, Arizona, as he recovers from the side effects of cancer treatment,” a statement from his office said.

McCain’s wife Cindy tweeted that she’s looking forward to his release from the hospital.

Daughter Meghan McCain touted his “grit and determination” as an inspiration to her.

Arizona’s junior Sen. Jeff Flake, who is retiring, also tweeted his support.

Doctors not involved in McCain’s treatment told AZCentral that complications like the one the senator was treated for is common in people undergoing brain-cancer treatment.

“We are seeing diverticulitis in more and more brain cancer patients,” Nader Sanai, a neurosurgeon and director of Barrow Brain Tumor Research Institute, told the outlet.
