Internal Poll Shows Campa-Najjar Best Positioned Against Hunter
Quarter of voters remain undecided
A Democratic candidate challenging embattled Republican Rep. Duncan Hunter says his internal polling shows he is best positioned to take on the incumbent.
Former Obama administration official Ammar Campa-Najjar’s campaign released an internal poll showing him in second place behind Hunter in California’s 50th District ahead of next month’s primary.
Tulchin Research interviewed 500 likely primary election voters yielding a 4.38 point margin of error.
Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race for California’s 50th District Likely Republican.
The survey showed Hunter leads with 39 percent of likely voters and Campa-Najjar polling at 14 percent. El Cajon Republican Mayor Bill Wells came in third with 8 percent.
But 25 percent of voters polled remain undecided.
“We could eke this out in the general once we’ve consolidated all the anti-Hunter voters currently divided among six candidates,” Campa-Najjar said. “We haven’t started to prosecute Hunter on his stuff.”
Democrats Bill Malloy and retired Navy SEAL Josh Butner both polled at 6 percent of likely voters, according to Campa-Najjar’s poll.
“I think my numbers will go up,” Campa-Najjar said. “If the election were held today, it’d be me and Hunter.”
With Hunter is under federal investigation for using campaign money to pay for personal expenses, Campa-Najjar and Butner are engaged in a bitter contest to challenge the Republican.
Butner accused Campa-Najjar’s campaign of being behind a website that said Butner’s father was affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan and Campa-Najjar accused Butner’s campaign of planting a story about his grandfather being a Palestinian terrorist despite dying before Campa-Najjar was born.
