Liberal Group Targets Swing Districts Over Tax Overhaul
Six-figure ad campaign airs in Iowa, Maine and Washington districts
A liberal outside group is targeting incumbent Republicans for their vote in support of the tax legislation that was passed last year.
Tax March, a liberal group critical of the law, said the ad was part of a six-figure ad campaign.
The advertisement features accountant Andrew Scalise saying he initially supported the tax overhaul but then realized he would have to tell some of his clients they would pay more taxes.
The advertisements will play in Iowa’s 1st and 3rd Districts, held by Reps. Rod Blum and David Young, respectively; Maine’s 2nd District, held by Bruce Poliquin; and Washington’s 5th District, held by Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers.
“This tax plan overwhelmingly benefits the wealthy at the expense of working families, and the American people know that it’s a bad deal,” Tax March Executive Nicole Gill said in a statement announcing the ads.
Blum is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in 2018 and both his and Young’s districts went from voting for Barack Obama to voting for President Donald Trump in 2016.
Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales rates the race for Iowa’s 1st District as Tilt Republican and Iowa’s 3rd Likely Republican.
McMorris Rodgers’ district was long considered a safe Republican one, but Inside Elections changed the district’s rating from Solid Republican to Likely Republican in February.
Poliquin’s district is frequently a target of Democrats but the Republican won his district by almost 10 points in 2016. Inside Elections rates the race Likely Republican.
