Rep. Al Green took issue with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi for downplaying some Democrats’ efforts to impeach President Donald Trump.

Green and at least a few dozen of his other House Democratic colleagues have spearheaded an effort to impeach the president over policies “based on his bigotry,” such as a ban on entry to the United States for citizens of majority-Muslim countries and the rollback of a program to protect immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children but who have grown up here.

“It is regrettable that Leader Pelosi would trivialize President Trump’s hateful discrimination against Jews, Latinos, Blacks, Women, and the LGBTQ community by reducing the President’s harmful bigotry to his ‘being a jerk,’” Green said in a statement Monday. “Love for my country will not permit me to allow the President’s bigotry to be trivialized and minimized.”

In Dallas on Friday, Pelosi said initiating impeachment proceedings against Trump if Democrats retake control of the House after the 2018 midterms would be “a gift to Republicans.”

Pelosi specifically singled out Green for undermining party unity with his calls for impeachment.

“We have elections,” Pelosi said. “Go vote if it’s a policy thing and a behavior thing.”

“II don’t know if you can get impeached for being a jerk, but if we did, this guy would be long gone,” the California Democrat continued. “But that’s not unifying.”

Green introduced articles of impeachment against Trump last December in a mostly symbolic move to protest his presidency.

The House killed the resolution, voting 364-58 on a motion to table it.

At the time, Pelosi and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland issued a joint statement excoriating the president, but saying that it wasn’t the time to expel him from office.

“This President has made statements and taken actions that are beyond the pale for most Americans, embracing those who espouse hatred and division while promoting policies that would harm our economy and undermine our national security,” Pelosi and Hoyer said.

But, they added, it is “not the time to consider articles of impeachment.”
