New York Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley collapsed Wednesday at a rally in Washington to protest the Trump administration’s immigration policy allowing parents and children of illegal immigrants to be separated at the border.

“Until they arrest us, we will stay here, however long it takes,” protesters chanted just as Crowley fell to the street in front of U.S. Customs & Border protection, according to a tweet from a CNN reporter who was at the scene.

Crowley collapsed due to heat exhaustion but is in fine condition now, according to his office.

“Wish I could say the same for the children and parents at the border,” Crowley tweeted. Representatives such as Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill, John Lewis, D-Ga., Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., and Al Green, D-Texas, all joined Crowley in the protest. Actor John Cusack was also present.

In early May, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that first-time illegal entrants to the country would not be left off with a warning, that they would be prosecuted to the fullest extent and children may be placed in foster care through the Federal government for the duration of the prosecution.

“I cannot think of an act that is more cruel and more inhumane than to rip the child from the arms of a mother,” said Guttierrez.

Green tweeted that the Trump Administration’s new policy is “barbaric” and said undocumented immigrant families are “simply seeking refuge.”

This administration’s cruel immigration policies have been tearing families apart for too long. The barbaric practice of separating parents from children for simply seeking refuge must end because a great nation doesn’t divide; it unifies. #FamiliesBelongTogether
