President Donald Trump will meet with House Republicans Tuesday evening to express his support for a compromise immigration bill the chamber will vote on later in the week, according to a source familiar with the plan.

The president will head to the Capitol to meet with the House Republican Conference Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Trump is expected to express his support for two immigration bills the House is planning to vote on next week: a conservative measure by House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte and a compromise measure negotiated by members from a cross section of the conference.

The House GOP whip team is expected to count votes for the compromise measure during a 6:30 p.m. vote series Tuesday.

Speaker Paul D. Ryan told reporters last week that House Republicans had worked “hand in glove” with the administration in crafting the compromise bill and aides had signaled the president would likely support it.

But Trump threw a curveball Friday morning when he went on Fox News and said he “certainly wouldn’t sign” the legislation. A White House spokesman sent a statement about nine hours later walking back the comment, saying the president confused the compromise bill for one supported by a few moderate Republicans and most Democrats.

The Trump administration has long expressed its support for the Goodlatte bill, but GOP leaders have said it doesn’t have the support to pass the House.
