Updated 11:10 a.m. | Meghan McCain, the daughter of late Sen. John McCain, issued a rebuke of Donald Trump — without naming him — during remarks at a funeral service in Washington at which the president was not welcome.

“We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness. The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege,” she said at the start of the service.

“My father wasn’t an opportunistic man of wealth who sat back while others make their sacrifices,” she said in a not-too-thinly veiled shot at the sitting president.

Meghan McCain said that her father “was defined by love.” She told the audience of current and former lawmakers, Cabinet officials and celebrities that her father’s time in captivity during the Vietnam war or during his House career or decades in the Senate did not define him.

She told a story of her father kissing her knee when she fell as a child, saying it helps her to keep going when life trips her as an adult.

“The America of John McCain is the America of Abraham Lincoln, fulfilling the promise of the Declaration of Independence,” she said.

She called her father “an exception” in an era when no politician wants to accept blame or admit failures.

The cathedral erupted in applause when she said that the America of John McCain was always great.

“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” she said.

Trump left the White House dressed for golf at his Virginia resort around 10:30 a.m.

While McCain was mourned in Washington, Trump focused his attention on stalled trade talks and issued a threat to Canada.

As his motorcade carried him to his North Virginia golf resort after being asked by the McCain family to skip the service, Trump tweeted he sees “no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal.”

“If we don’t make a fair deal for the U.S. after decade of abuse, Canada will be out,” he wrote a few minutes after Meghan McCain used her remarks at her father’s funeral to slam Trump without naming him. “Congress should not interfere with these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off.”

The late senator had been perhaps the leading Republican voice in Congress in criticizing the president’s foreign policy, which often criticizes and threatens longtime U.S. allies.
