Democrats choose Milwaukee for 2020 national convention
Wisconsin is a perennial battleground state, which Hillary Clinton narrowly lost in 2016
The Democratic Party has chosen Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to host its 2020 national convention, selecting a perennial battleground state for the political confab.
The event will be held July 13 through July 16 of 2020 at the Fiserv Forum.
Wisconsin is a frequent political street fight for the two parties. President Donald Trump narrowly won in 2016, depriving Hillary Clinton of what had previously been a state in the Democratic column for decades. But in 2018 state voters ousted Republican Gov. Scott Walker in favor of Democrat Tony Evers, and re-elected Democratic Sen. Tammy Baldwin by a sizable margin.
“Milwaukee is more than equipped to be a great host for this event,” the Democratic Party said in a statement on Twitter. “Trade unions built the state-of-the-art Fiserv Forum, the convention site where Democrats from across the nation will nominate the next president of the United States.”
The Fiserv Forum opened last year and is home to the Milwaukee Bucks NBA franchise.
Following the selection of Milwaukee, Martha Laning, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, said the state party was “thrilled” for the “once-in-a-lifetime economic opportunity.”
“With the collaboration of Milwaukee’s corporate community, the nonprofit sector, the small business community, and engaged Milwaukeeans, we are confident Milwaukee 2020 will be a world-class event that makes Wisconsinites proud,” Laning said. “The work starts today!”
