A group of activists attempted to “occupy” the Cannon rotunda Tuesday morning before approximately 20 people were arrested by Capitol Police.

The protesters were calling for the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.

“Ain’t no power like the power of the people, because the power of the people don’t stop,” the demonstrators chanted.

The group wore T-shirts that read “Congress, Do Your Job #TimeToImpeach,” as they placed a large banner on the floor of the rotunda.

“If Congress won’t defend the constitution, then the people will,” the banner read.

Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, a freshman Democrat, submitted an impeachment resolution in late March,  with only one other member’s name of support — Texas Democrat Al Green, who has tried to push the impeachment issue on his own before. The House has not taken action on the resolution. 

The event, led by grassroots group By the People, was planned in advance and media were alerted. The group announced in February that two House freshmen — Tlaib and Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar — were the first lawmakers to sign the group’s pledge calling on lawmakers to “defend us from a president who believes he can get away with anything.”

Tlaib rallied with By the People in March outside Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, where protesters were also arrested. Tlaib was not among those arrested.
