Horsing Around

Members of Congress have myriad responsibilities: write and vote on laws, provide advice and consent for presidential nominees, campaign for re-election … and award very large trophies.

Old Dominion Sen. John Warner (R) did his part in 1989 at the Virginia Gold Cup. Dressed for the occasion, Warner presented the trophy to Jack Fisher, who rode Call Louis to victory at the annual event in The Plains. In this picture, Fisher’s wife, Sheila (who owned the horse), and mother-in-law, Sheila Williams, await Jack alongside Warner.

Gold Cup buffs probably know this was not Fisher’s first victory — that came in in 1981. He won nine times and rode the Gold Cup’s all-time leading winner, Saluter, to victory for six consecutive years beginning in 1994.
