Docked in D.C.

The CSS Stonewall, a 1,390-ton ironclad ram, is anchored in sight of the Capitol in this photo from the 1860s. According to the Naval Historical Center, the ship was built in France for the Confederate Navy and initially held by Denmark and later Spain before making it to the United States after the Civil War ended in 1865. The ship stayed in D.C.’s Navy Yard for two years before being sold to Japan.
