Subway Accident Injures One
A Rayburn subway car crashed Tuesday night, sending the operator to the hospital and putting the car out of service Wednesday.
The car failed to slow down when it reached the end of the line and bumped into the protective railing, according to Eva Malecki, spokeswoman for the Architect of the Capitol. The operator was sent to the hospital only for observation and was released Wednesday morning, she said.
“We have been doing a thorough inspection of the subway car today to determine the cause of the incident and as soon as we have identified that and made any repairs as necessary, we will return the car to service,” she said, adding that officials hoped to have the car working today.
The crash happened at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday during its regular service hours. Malecki didn’t know if anyone other than the operator was on board, but it appears as though no Members were riding the car and no one else was hurt.
Malecki said she couldn’t recall any similar incident in her five years at the AOC.
