New England Members Urge More Help With Heating

With a second stimulus package on the horizon, nearly two dozen New England Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday urging her to triple current funding for home heating aid.

“As you plan the remaining weeks of the legislative session, the New England delegation urges you to take action that addresses the rising price of home heating oil,” the letter states.

Specifically, the letter calls on Pelosi to increase funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program by $9 billion and to provide $1 billion for weatherization assistance programs. It also reinforces the Speaker’s call to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a way to bring down rising gas costs.

The letter is signed by 21 Democrats, including Financial Services Chairman Barney Frank (Mass.), Energy Independence and Global Warming Chairman Ed Markey (Mass.) and Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Chairman John Olver (Mass.).
