Louisiana: Wealthy Democrat on TV Against Scalise

Wealthy businessman Jim Harlan (D), running against Rep. Steve Scalise (R) in the fall, dropped the first television ad of the 1st district campaign Thursday.

The one-minute bio ad seeks to emphasize Harlan as “independent-minded” with a pro-gun, anti-abortion, fiscally conservative political philosophy.

Harlan is a former aide with the U.S. Department of Energy who touts himself as an expert on energy production issues. He has already loaned his Congressional campaign $525,000 and raised about $70,000 more since entering the race.

Scalise won a special election this spring to replace now-Gov. Bobby Jindal in the 1st district, which is considered to be the most GOP district in the state.
