Arkansas: ‘Bible Belt Liberal’ Says He’ll Challenge Lincoln

Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D), already a top target of Republicans in 2010, got her first Democratic primary challenger Monday.

Drew Pritt, a small-business owner and self-described “Bible Belt liberal,— announced that he will challenge Lincoln from the left.

“The fact remains we are at a historic moment in our country’s history,— Pritt said in a statement. “So it’s very upsetting, when we see a Democratic U.S. Senator who doesn’t support a public option for health care reform. It’s very upsetting when we see a Democratic U.S. Senator who doesn’t support the Employee Free Choice Act. It’s very upsetting when we see a Democratic U.S. Senator who waivers [sic] and waffles on basic civil rights. And the only explanation that is given is, she is a Senator from the deep South.—

Pritt, who launched and then abandoned a run for lieutenant governor in 2006, said he was hoping that higher-profile liberals would challenge Lincoln, but that none came forward. He went on to compare his long-shot bid to campaigns for change waged by Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
